Rather than being your thoughts and emotions, be the awareness behind them.
— Eckhart Tolle
Lair Torrent, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

I work from a nonjudgmental, all inclusive model of therapy, where all who are ready to do the work are welcome.  In my practice with individuals, couples and groups, I introduce awareness or mindfulness practices to help the client become conscious of their own internal patterns.  I treat the client from a holistic perspective; meeting them where they are, helping them to know themselves mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.  With this new found awareness of self, I support my clients in recognizing the parts of themselves that are “coming to play” in the negative interaction cycles that plague them.  From this place of inner understanding, the seeds of compassion for self and others are born; allowing for new choices to be made and old patterns to be broken.

In a safe and nurturing environment, my clients are able to explore their present difficulties with a look to how their past may be influencing those struggles.  Through this process my clients are able to transform their negative inner narratives, manage their anger, their stress and their depression; allowing them to find more balance and peace.

I specialize in working with adults and couples dealing with a multitude of issues including:

  •        Relationship Issues/Couples counseling
  •         Anger Management
  •         Family of origin issues
  •         Loneliness/Desire to be in a relationship
  •         Life Transitions
  •         Premarital Counseling
  •         Anxiety and Depression
  •         Co-Dependence
  •         Trauma
  •         Stuck in unsatisfying relationships
  •         Self Esteem
  •         Spiritual Issues

I am a licensed Marriage & Family Therapist.  I earned my Masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mercy College and was trained in Eastern psychology and thought at The Helix Training program.  I have been resourced/interviewed by NPR, the New York Times, and Rolling Stone magazine for my expertise and work in couples and individual counseling.  I am currently in private practice in Charleston.

About You

The tagline of my practice is "When you're ready for change".  If you are not truly ready for change - to put in the work necessary to create what you want in your life, you might not be ready for my practice.  Unlike most therapists, I am not selling just 50 minutes a week; I am selling a practiced life.  The time between our sessions is as important as the time we spend together.  This means working on and working with the things we uncover in session between sessions.  In my experience, clients who are willing to put in the work see the most progress.

As a therapist, it is my role to help you become more aware of your mental, emotional and physical processes.  In doing so, I help you open the door to choosing your words and your actions.  From this place of choice, you move away from the “knee jerk” reactivity that tends to get us into trouble.  With practice, we become more flexible, receptive and attuned to our own needs and to the needs of those around us.

From a holistic perspective, I help you become conscious of your inner process, mind, body and spirit, and together we look at how this process impacts you and your relationships.  With this understanding, we work to cultivate compassion for both self and others.
